What is the most important factor in driving traffic to your blog using social media?
This is the question I hear most from fellow bloggers and website owners. It’s what everybody wants to know. It’s the million dollar question that most people just can’t seem to answer. Even though they already know what the answer is. Which is, of course, is firstly doing your due diligence and educating yourself. Then secondly and more importantly is applying that knowledge on a consistent basis.
The first part is the easy part. There is a lot of great information on the web about how to leverage social media to drive traffic to your websites. A simple search on google will provide you with literally a million links to digest. From step by step tutorials, youtube videos and blogging communities like the Blogging Traffic Community. The information is all right there at your fingertips. It’s all there just waiting for you to come and digest it all.
The second part is where most people falter. If you want your blog to be any kind of success you are going to work on promoting it every day. Not just when you can. You have to apply all the tricks and tips you spent hours learning how to leverage social media every single day. If you don’t, you simply won’t achieve the success you’re looking for.
You have to expel the notion that somehow, someway you will buck the trend. That your content is so good that it just can’t fail. Let me tell you it can and it will if you don’t put the time in every day to promote it. Stop wasting time looking for the magic formula that does exist. A blog or web page is no different than any other project you ever tried doing. You’re going to have to work at it every day. Most of that time will be spent leveraging social media to promote it. Unless you have big money to buy advertising it.
You spent all this time creating all this great content. Now you have to take that time to grow your social media to drive that traffic to the great content. That requires daily diligence. Even if you have better things to do. It is without exception what you have to do. If you do, you’ll be successful at driving traffic to your website.
Building a successful website is a labor of love. Success is measured in feet not miles. Apply yourself on a daily basis to grow your social media. You will travel far. Even if its one foot at a time.
This may not be what you want to hear. It, however, is the truth.

I totally agree with you. You may have good content, but without promoting it to reach the right audience, then you won’t achieve your goals. Promotion is key to achieving blogging success online.

I had no idea how much time and effort would need to be spent promoting my blog when I first started. Finding communities of bloggers, like the Blogging Traffic Community mentioned in this post, has been a game changer for me.

Hi Keith,
Nice post. People don’t seem to realize that blogging is a long endgame. It’s part of your business, the other part is getting traffic in various ways. If you have no traffic you are not making sales. Selling is part of business blogging. Lot’s to learn not just putting up a blog and blogging.

I think you hit the nail on the head on why sometimes blogging does not work out for some people. You really do have to invest in it every single day. Promotion is key.

Totally true! Blogging is not a “get rich quick” scheme…and it takes hard work to be successful! Especially if that means one day at a time!
